Non-GMO Project Verified

Close

We have partnered with the Non-GMO Project to ensure all of our chicken feed ingredients have been tested and verified according to the Non-GMO Project Standard for avoidance of genetically engineered ingredients.

As the only third-party verifier recognized by the USDA, the Non-GMO Project Verified seal guarantees our birds are fed a non-GMO diet that meets the strictest of industry standards. Of course, chicken itself is not genetically modified, but the Non-GMO Project Verification on our packaging is the added assurance of a non-GMO supply chain.

All-Vegetarian Diet

Close

You won’t find any animal by-products in our chicken feed; we feed our birds primarily a diet of Non-GMO Project Verified corn and soy. However, our chickens are free to graze naturally outdoors, grabbing a few bugs or blades of grass.

Humanely Raised

Our Sustainably Farmed practices provide a framework of best practices for animal welfare, environmental stewardship and being a good neighbor. Our animal welfare practices are validated by third party audits, including the Global Animal Partnership (GAP). Nutrient Management Conservation Plans for each farm protect the land and water, and documented conservation programs drive ongoing reductions in environmental impact. And, we take pride in the appearance and management of our farms.

In addition, we work with rice farmers, who use our chicken litter as fertilizer, and in turn, provide us with rice hulls for poultry house bedding.

Sustainability doesn't stop at the farm, though. Our plant is ISO 14001 certified, we have an employee-based sustainability team and we were among the first organic chicken companies to use tray-less packaging.

Certified USDA Organic

Close

Our organic products, which include the ROSIE® and SONOMA RED® brands, meet the requirements of the National Organic Standards Board and are Certified USDA Organic.

In fact, the ROSIE® brand was the first chicken to be Certified USDA Organic. Certified Organic means raised in a free range environment on certified organic farms, fed a non-GMO diet with no animal by-products and never given antibiotics.

All of these requirements have to be certified by a recognized third-party; we use Oregon Tilth, a nonprofit research and education organization dedicated to biologically sound and socially equitable agriculture. The organic certification process covers not only the end product, but also every step of the process and supply chain, all the way to market.

As one of the leaders in organic chicken, we hold fast to the belief that organic is more than a label; it's an approach to agriculture that strives to work in harmony with the earth and its inhabitants to find more naturally sustainable ways to produce food.

The USDA organic seal verifies that producers met animal health and welfare standards, did not use antibiotics or growth hormones* used 100% organic feed, and provided animals with access to the outdoors.

*Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones or steroids in poultry.

Air Chill

Close

ROCKY®, ROSIE® and SONOMA RED® chickens are 100% air chilled. Most chicken is chilled during processing by soaking in cold water, some of which gets absorbed. Because our chickens are air chilled, they do not retain excess water or lose natural juices found in the meat, helping to preserve the chicken's natural flavor.

Free Range

Close

While some brands may only meet the minimum for what is required to describe their chickens as "free range", we believe that free range should mean exactly what it implies. So we give our chickens open space to freely move about pecking the ground, taking dust baths, exploring the grass or simply soaking up the sunshine – doing the natural things birds do.

Our outdoor spaces are at least half the size of the poultry house, and typically as big as the barn itself. When the weather is just right, you’ll see most of the birds outside. To encourage them to venture out, we have sunshades to ease the transition from barn to outdoors (chickens are very sensitive to light), feed and water both inside and outside of the house, and roosts and other enrichments.

Our houses are spacious, with room for birds to move about and exhibit normal behaviors in a low-stress environment open to fresh air.

In the evening we allow our birds inside to roost in the house, where they are warm, dry and safe from predators. We also wait to let a flock outside until they're fully feathered and protected from the elements, which is at about four weeks of age.

No Antibiotics Ever

Close

As the use of antibiotics in poultry production has become of increasing concern, we have chosen to remove all antibiotics from our poultry raising practices. So, when you buy one of our chickens, you can be assured it was raised with No Antibiotics, EVER.

We put our effort into building up the bird’s own defense systems with a balanced diet, clean environment and the holistic use of nature’s own medicines, such as organic enzymes and probiotics, the natural disease-fighting powers of herbs and the benefits of fresh air and sunshine.

Some companies use antibiotics when vaccinating eggs, which still allows them to label their product as "organic." Not us. When we say no antibiotics ever, we mean never!

However, if a flock does become ill, our commitment to the welfare of those birds requires us to treat them appropriately. If our vet prescribes antibiotics, then you won’t see those chickens sold under our brands.

Pasture Raised

Close

SONOMA RED® chickens are raised in a pasture-centered environment. As soon as they are able to comfortably and safely be out of doors (about four weeks of age), they have unlimited, 24-hour access to pasture areas. The pastures are fenced and covered with netting to protect the birds from predators, and we have elevated outdoor roosting areas, and outside feeders and drinkers. We rotate the pastures so that the chickens have access to grassy areas. Since these birds are outside day and night, we use a heritage breed that is hardier than the typical broiler chicken.
